This is the history of CnC Central before they merged with CnC Source. To read CnC Sources history before the merge with CnC Central and after read the history below the CnC Central history.
The history of CnC Central is relatively short but long with so many events happening in such a little time. Since I have a bad memory though I'll make it short. If I have missed anything, or you want credit for your work in this site, just e-mail me. This is also not exact because of my bad memory :(
It all starts out at in South America when an "anominous" guy named Red October decided to start a website. This was around 1997-1998 he got the name of the site from his brother, Red October's Red Alert Site, or RORAS for short. The first host for this new site would be at geocities, but after about a month Dario from PlanetCNC decided to host RORAS. With this came a new site layout. Then Red October made the move that changed the course of history. He hired a guy named Kresten, a.k.a Kaje. Kaje (a.k.a - me) started out as a simple site updater and remained this way for about two days. Red October promoted me to such jobs as reviewer, file updater, and site updater. Soon, I was PR too. Staff came and went, but I remained. Because of this, I became co-webmaster. Then, for the worst, Red October disappeared.
The staff really didn't notice this, and after the first week of not hearing from him I was thinking the best. Maybe a holiday that he didn't tell me about, or a lose of temporary connection (had happened before). After a month I was the only one updating. Probably after six weeks of Red October not appearing, and me being the only remaining active staff member I took matters into my own hands. I began hiring staff, updating the site, and added the sections Tiberian Dawn, Tiberian Sun, Sole Survivor and the future Tiberian Twilight. I then changed the name to better suit the new featured site to CnC Central. Things didn't change much in the next month or so, Red Alert remaining the biggest feature. Then I moved up to the big leagues :D I got the domain name CnC-Central.com, hired a new staff line, and got newer content. My main staff updater was Rogue Leader, who remained loyal until the site got closed down (he know works at CnCNz.com).
I moved through 3 site layouts in about a time of a year, getting around 300 hits a day. Then, as I was expanding CnC Central to different sections ran by different people with different layouts, but all similar to the main one (also, a merge with Ankle-Boy was in the process) tragic struck CnC Central once again. My domain host decided to shut me down in plans of his own site named CnC Central. I wasn't shutting down yet, and kept cnc-central.co.uk up and running for another month. When I was only recieving like 20 hits a day, I gave up. The site remained shut down for another 3-4 months. This is around the time when Assassin talked to me about merging CnC Central with a site that wasn't out in public yet, CnC Source. After many discussions and debates between us, the merge was final. The History continues now with CnC Source's.
To learn CnC Centrals history before they merged with CnC Source read the history above. Below is the full history of CnC Source its all as close as I can remember it so this will have to do.
Ok the history of CnC Source is very long. The idea first came about in a discussion between Me (Assassin), MW (Midnight Wolf) and our GFX guy Omega. At the time we where known as the Tiberium Rising Team a mod team that I had founded to create interesting mods that brought Tiberian Sun to new levels. The Tiberium Rising site I founded on my own back when TS was first released around 1997 and started at Tripod. Midnight Wolf was my first staff member and as the Tiberium Rising got more popular our team grew and we had an offer from Omega to create a layout for us (at the time our layout was very simple). Back then Me and MW where pretty hopeless at GFX and Omega was the best GFX guy we had ever seen. When me and MW decided we wanted to eventually start a CNC site that covered all C&C's we had to decide on a name. We went through many and each one we went through was taken already we where stuck for a name. When Omega came up with the name CnC Source it was perfect the 1# Source for all your C&C Needs. We got temporary hosting at whattown.com and built up CnC Source, Omega created a layout to use for it. He had also started a few sections himself me and MW added to the site as well creating more sections and adding content. We started development of this site in 1998 and it has been worked on due to this very day, the reason for such a delay was server problems and our duty to create mods because we had the mod Team Tiberium Rising. When we realised the workload was too much for 3 people we hired staff from people we could trust to keep this site secret until the day we would release this site. They agreed and the staff where from the TR Mod Team which you may have known as the Tiberium Rising Team. The creators of Tiberium Rising and where also in development of CnC Kingdoms and many other mods that where added to our list. Anyway back to CnC Source we hired Cosmik Man and Dak. Cosmik Man helped us along the way and Dak did what he could in his busy schedule. Later in the first half of 1999 Omega disappeared he was the only one of us good at GFX and he left us at a time of great need for his skills. But he didn't desert us we later discovered in 2001 that he was in a car accident and had been out of reach of a computer for a long long time.
Later a tragety near the end of 1999 we had been working on the site for a long time now but didn't really get to do too much because we where busy making mods. We where also struggling to develop our GFX skills which where coming along nicly. But the tragety was that Tiberiumwarzone.com had closed down which we lost our site Tiberium Rising and we re-established the site at Hypermart and they cut off hosting to us because we where not a business site. We decided it was best to keep Tiberium Rising closed and to concentrate on making CNC Source. Once that was completed we could go back to Mod Making as the Rising Forces team not known as the Tiberium Rising team any longer. The Rising Forces is now part of this site to make things easier and so we don't have 2 sites when we don't really need 2.
Our GFX was coming along great MW created a new layout and we continued on the site until we had almost all sections done. But with new CnC games coming out and new sections to add it was hard to keep up. MW created another newer layout which we use to this day. Then we started getting all minor pages up and everything up and running. I was then contacted by Kaje head webmaster of CnC Central saying he was leaving his site and that he needed a new webmaster to take over. I did and after alot of discussing and how CnC Central was not doing too good we decided to merge CNC Central and CnC Source together. This delayed development but also sped somethings up because we where able to merge the content together. We then hired CronoStrife707, RAShadows, Sandworm & Kaje of course from the CnC Central Staff we did contact more but we didn't get any replies. Shortly after we where offered a domain by a man named Lew we took it. It was www.cnc2.org he got us a host and we moved all our site to there. It was very generous of him to give us the domain and I am glad he did offer it because otherwise we would have never gotten this far. We owe a big thanx to Lew and a big thanx to Kaje for merging with us, which got us more staff and made things alot more interesting.
We continued updating frantically and where nearly finished when. Another tragity struck our host went down for 2 months this was around the Feb 2001 when this happened. After the 2 months It still didn't come back up so we where lost without a host. Lew got us another host after 2 months of no development (the same 2 months the host was down for) in CnC Source we lost about quarter of our files I had most backed up though. We brang everything back and where glad to be working on CnC Source again after such a long time. We summoned the staff currently working at CnC Source and we all got back to work. Later we completed the site and it was released in 2001 April.
This CnC Source stayed up for 6 months with no downtime, we had established the site and were doing quite well. Then after those 6 months our host died and Lew disappeared for good so we lost the domain www.cnc2.org as well. We kept going up on other hosts for acouple of months or a matter of weeks we couldn't find a stable host anywhere but we kept moving hosts hoping one would stay up. By the time of August 2002 we had an offer from Smartmlp for stable hosting for CnC Source. He kept his promise and we started work on a newer CnC Source considerable time had passed since our last release and with all the server moving little updating had been done. So we overhauled the site I created a new layout to replace MW's one from 2001, we overhauled most of the content. But in the interest of getting the site released asap we concentrated on getting the critical things done and all the extra's we would do after our release. We then released CnC Source on November 27th 2002 and its been online non-stop since. About four months after being hosted by Smartmlp CnC Source grew quite quickly and we were getting alot of hits and using alot of bandwidth, we kept exceeding our monthly bandwidth limits. Then Armageddon Entertainment started up and they looked like a promising network so we joined them and were hosted for about 10 months. By this time CnC Source had grown very large compared to its original release thanx to Arm-Ent offering us unlimited space and bandwidth CnC Source was free to grow as large as it needed to.
Our team had changed alot in this time the only original founding staff of CnC Source that was left was Me and Midnight Wolf but we had alot of new team members that had proved themselves to be great contributers to the Source. Such as NeoSaber, Sgtmay and Scorpio9a who helped us a great deal in many aspects. Then after the 10 months of being at Arm-Ent we had an offer from a new host called Neron Network. They offered us unlimited space and bandwidth for free as Arm-Ent had been charging us a small fee. So we agreed and moved the site over to Neron Network. Luckily we did as Arm-Ent closed the day after we moved to Neron and deleted all its hosted sites. But even so we make monthly backups of CnC Source so not much would have been lost but it was a relief. Then Neron provided us with great hosting until around 2004 Feb-March we saw GamingSource (www.gamingsource.co.uk). Neron was complaining our bandwidth usage was too high but there readings were incorrect, but Neron argued they had to be accurate and brought in limits and were no longer willing to host a website of our size. So we applyed at Gaming Source because we looked around and they ran things kinda like we did and we knew that we had finally found the perminate home for CnC Source. We become one of Gaming Source's Source sites being the one for Command & Conquer joining our neighbour on the network CnC Den :). We have been proudly hosted by Gaming Source too this day, the site has grown and we have many more plans for it we now get on average 600 hits per day and growing and our team has grown and ranks filled with more skilled staff members who will help make CnC Source even greater. History is in the making.
