Also, since you're working on the code, in my opinion a larger field of view would really feel more C&C like.

I couldn't agree with you more, but unfortunately the Generals SAGE engine doesn't allow you increase the field of view, it allows you to set the camera up higher, but not all of the terrain is rendered.

Of course, we could turn on full map rendering, where the whole of the map is rendered even if you are viewing a small portion, this however greatly increases processing speed issues.

Additionally, I'd like to hear people's thoughts on whether the classic C&C captured tech limits are retained..

e.g., in C&C, if you were GDI and took over a Nod base, you couldn't build obelisks or the Temple, and you certainly couldn't build an MCV that deploys into a Nod ConYard.

Originally I had the plan to retain that, but I'm asking myself what's the point? It's only skirmish Im talking about and how many people bother to take over another tech in multiplayer anyway?

Yeah, I don't even take over other tech in skirmish except once in a blue moon when I feel like it. Ditch the limited tech.

Setting the camera heigt at 500 and the pitch at 45° works fine for me.

Might do that, another option I'm considering is reducing the scale, like in TSR.

That would also allow to make bigger maps. Good Idea. (changing the pitch to 45° too would be good anyway)

The field of view is a problem with generals, as if you make it too big, you get a lot of graphical bugs.
