Yeah, you heard me. Mike Verdu announced the end of the previously upcoming first-person team shooter, Tiberium.

Quote

It is with a heavy heart that I announce an end to all work on Tiberium effective immediately. I've consulted with Nick Earl and Frank Gibeau at the EA Games Label and together we have reached the conclusion that given the time and resources remaining, we will not be able to deliver this product to an appropriate level of quality.

The game had fundamental design challenges from the start. We fought to correct the issues, but we were not successful; the game just isn't coming together well enough to meet our own quality expectations as well as those of our consumers.

Unfortunately, this action will result in several individuals on the team being released. We will make every effort to place affected individuals on projects within the studio - and where that isn't possible, to connect them with opportunities in other teams at EA.

This is the right move for the studio and the company, but it's particularly hard for me because of the impact it will have on our people. Many individuals contributed their time and talents to this game. I spent time in the trenches with them and I was continually impressed by their work.

Moving forward, we need to make sure this doesn't happen again. I believe we are already doing a better job of engineering success in from the start. The quality bar has been raised. Now we need to step up our focus on great design and execution, catching any problems early and correcting them quickly.

We will strive to live up to our values: To make great games, treat people right, keep our commitments, and grow our business.

Those who suspect what caused the cancellation believe it ranged from lack of scope with the cnc story, EA being fledgeling FPS marketers, distractions by all of the Red Alert 3 hype, already present delays and an overall general disinterest in the game.

I'm not really sure if this comes as a surprise, especially after Tiberium community manager Zonerunner left. All I can really say is the design decisions made regarding the franchise are much more often than not, ones that I do not agree with and the fact that Tiberium "had fundamental design challenges from the start" only backs that up.

Seriously, I don´t like this at all. They happily released shit like Kane´s Wrath (still do in fact, they just released a new bundle) and, no of offense to the people who like it, are working on a game that is designed to be crap (you can call it "trash" if that makes you feel better) and now cancel a game that actually looked cool and had a very promising concept. I´m simply not buying their "it didn´t meet our standards" bullshit. Seems more like they´re all to happy to have set up C&C as their next EA (e-)Sports title and don´t dare risking what it needs to make an innovative, individual game.

W000t! I am glad they aren't doing this anymore :D Because to me it seemed like a Halo knock of using C&C themes. Then if it was popular knowing EA they'd cancel all C&C RTSs and just do them in FPS. To me this is a plus.

P.S. More than 4 years for 200 posts XD

I think the C&C community, whether they realize it or not, will mourn the loss of this game. It was to be the saving grace for the Tiberum storyline: it would explain events after Kane's Wrath, flesh out parts of the storyline going back to the roots of the series, and most of all, it promised to fill in the plot holes surrounding the transition from "classic" to "new" Tiberium--a topic EA seems content now to callously ignore.

C'est la vie, c'est la vie.

On another topic altogether, I have a high-res copy of the original announcement trailer in WMV format. If I recall correctly, I was the 16th person to view it. :P

How could they explain the already messed up story line in a none related FPS to a RTS? As far as I am concerned they messed up the story line once EA got involved with C&C. I still wish Red Alert and Tiberian story lines would have been left interlaced.

It suffered the same fate as Renegade 2 it seems, thou Renegade2 didnt even make it to public announcement so Tiberium did do alot better then Ren 2

Thou the original Renegade as I understand it ran into major issues too, if u remember the original feature list Westwood posted the game only shipped with half of them, they cut a ton out of the game and I guess EA didnt want to cut anything from Tiberium to meet a release.

This game would have been so sweet too its exactly what they should have been doing after Tib wars came out instead of kanes wrath it was a nice addition with all the units and new abilitys and all that good stuff but they should have put more effort into this game. EA needs to get its act together and learn that C and C was the best thing that ever came to them and if they screw it up they will be such losers its not even funny oh and im a new user to this site.
