--- Helipad ---

One of the hallmarks of the Rapid Deployment and Logistics project was its tendency to take the simplest of buildings and turn it into a marvel of military engineering. This blending of mundane utility and high technology was often seamless, resulting in designs which appear unremarkable at first glance, but reveal their inner complexities when actively contributing to the war effort. One such structure was the Rapid Refueling and Re-arming Station, colloquially known simply as the Helipad.

First and foremost, the Helipad provides a clear, stable landing platform for VTOL craft such as the famous AV-10 Orca. With guidance from EVA, the craft land quickly and efficiently in a precise position. From there, automated systems carry ordnance from protected stores below the Helipad and load it onto the waiting vehicle. A team of technicians stand by to make sure everything is in order before the craft departs once again.

In a twist which surprised even its original creators, the Helipad found itself in the hands of the Brotherhood of Nod around the same time GDI began fielding the structure. The entire RDL engineering team was interrogated as to the breach of security; a scandal which the media quickly seized upon. At the end of the investigation, it was determined that Nod hackers were to blame, having exploited a glitch in the project’s firewalls. This incident would prompt a complete revamping of GDI’s computer security: from this point onward, all R&D projects would have a dedicated EVA overseeing their networks.

As far as battle data is concerned, the Helipad’s presence helped increase the efficiency of airborne operations by a staggering 37%. The ability to refit and refuel aircraft at such speeds caused a micro-revolution in air warfare. In essence, the only thing keeping aircraft out of the sky was the pilots’ need to rest. GDI Orcas spent an average of 12 hours a day in the air during TWI, effectively guaranteeing air superiority. This feat would never have been possible, however, were it not for the outstanding logistical capacity of the humble Helipad.

[The Helipad was modeled by Ric, who also finished up the texture started by Soviet Deso.]
